Fields  w Hotels    w Restaurants

In 1976 and early 1977, Lee Gallard, Curtis Lee, John Hughes, Bill Gardiner, Pat Brunner, Pat Kelley, Bill Bradley, Rudy Silguero, Sharon Silguero and Betty Marshall met with then Precinct Commissioner Bob Echols and reached an agreement to build four fields in the Cypresswood Park being designed.

The county agreed to clear the land and build concession stands and restrooms.  Our League committed to provide the lights, build fences, backstops, etc., and to provide maintenance for everything within our ballpark.  Spring-Klein borrowed $85,000 from Jetero Bank to build four fields.

The original fences plus backstops for all four fields cost $10,000 and were installed by a fence company.  Rudy Silguero and Coach Martin did the actual work of wiring and installing the field lights.  The fields were completed in 1978.  For the first few years our fields were all grass, including infields. Just a handful of volunteers with hand tools and mowers brought from their homes did maintenance of these fields.  In 1983, the League purchased its first tractor.  Wiley Steen, Sr. Started supervising a paid worker who handled field and building maintenance.

Around 1980, another important change was made.  The League started using paid umpires for games.

We continue to make upgrades to our fields.  Improvement made around the Spring-Klein Girls Softball League complex include outfield fences, remodeled batting cages, field upgrades, improved lights and center pavilion tent.

SKGSL is one of the largest girls’ softball organizations which requires a tremendous amount of community support.  This support is received in several ways.  Monetary support is received by friends, family members and business owners of our community.   SKGSL also has multiple volunteers working on several fronts to keep SKGSL ready to play ball.

Softball Tournaments are planned, organized and implemented with SKGSL volunteers. Volunteers are the heart and soul of our League.  Over the past fifteen years our organization has donated over $200,000 to The Ronald McDonald House of Houston.   The Ronald McDonald House of Houston offers a home away from home for families that have children being treated at a Texas Medical Center institution for cancer or other serious illnesses.  In addition to donations, this charity event has become a nationally known tournament that college coaches from across the nation attend, looking for players who will fit into their college softball program.

SKGSL is helping build character in each young lady that plays on our fields. Research shows that girls who participate in organized sports have more self esteem, score higher on standardized test, and make better grades.  Our league is committed to the development of your child for future success through fun and competition!

Volunteers continue to be the heart and soul of Spring-Klein Girls Softball.  Please help our organization by becoming an active volunteer.

Ask any SKGSL Board member how you too can be a part of the fun!!
